Quote of the Week

I love quotes.  I collect them–really!  I have a document on my computer that is 70 pages of just quotes.  So, you can imagine the dilemma each week having to come up with a quote–because there’s so many of them!

Since it’s Thanksgiving this week here in America, I thought I’d share one on giving thanks.

I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. – G.K. Chesterton

Some observations:

If you were to continually think in thankful ways, for example, thinking:

  • “Thank you for my sweet husband.  Gosh, he’s handsome, kind, smart, and my soul mate, and I am so blessed to have him in my life” — try thinking that when you wake up and look at your guy!  Tell me you don’t feel more grateful and more in love with him!
  • “Thank you for this experience.  It didn’t feel so great, but I know at some point I will recognize the value and wisdom that will come to me because of it”–for something that happened that didn’t at the time feel so great.   My divorce didn’t feel so great, but in hindsight, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
  • “Thank you bed for supporting me last night” — Louise Hay thanks her bed every morning!
  • “Thank you for my kids.  They keep me on my toes, that’s for sure, but I know these times will pass soon enough and I want to enjoy them!  They’re awesome!”

Can you see how these instances really magnify the positive emotions behind the thought?  I love that:  “…gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.”  When you begin to train your mind by making gratitude a regular practice, your whole world shifts.  You look for the good; you focus on the things that enhance your life, instead of focusing on the distractions.

I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.  I want to give a quick shout-out to my blogger friend Bev who recently gave birth to her first child, a baby girl!  Check out her new little bundle here:  Linkouture.  Congratulations to her–I know she’s very thankful this Thanksgiving!  I met her and several other wonderful bloggers through the SITS Girls.  I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of that awesome group.  And I am thankful to you, dear reader, for stopping by the site!

  1. I love words, and I love quotes! I am really trying to focus on gratitude right now, especially because I feel like I am always in the middle of plans and projects and I forget to just be grateful for what’s right here and now. At this moment, I am grateful for my Christmas tree, which smells heavenly!

    1. There’s nothing like the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree! It’s funny how smells can trigger a sense of gratitude (or a memory). Thank you for sharing your positive outlook!
