What Keeps You Up at Night?

What keeps you up at night?  Is it the chores that are left undone?  Unfulfilled dreams?  Painful experiences that you want to resolve?  Is it a person you think of or a situation?  Excitement for the next day to come–or dread?  There are many reasons why you may not be able to shut off the busyness of your brain–but how much of what goes on in your head is within your control?

coaching and life coachI love the Serenity Prayer.  Its wisdom helped me a lot while I was going through my divorce.  It reminded me to focus on the things that were within my control and to let go of the things that weren’t.  Not an easy feat during an incredibly stressful time in my life, but the divorce provided an invaluable opportunity to grow.  By the way–going off tangent here a little bit, but another thing that helped me was the quote, “Suffering is not seeing things the way they are” by Stephen Cope.  Suffering is a choice.

How much of what keeps you up at night is within your control?  First, focus on this part of your thoughts and actions.  If it’s a to-do list that goes round and round your head, write it down before you go to bed.  Get in the habit of running through a list of what you’re grateful for in your life.  Connect with God/Source/Angels/your guides or any other higher power that is positive and spiritually connecting.  Go to sleep with positivity going through your mind.  Visualize handing over your issues to a higher power and trust that the Universe is taking care of the details.

Here’s another idea:  Repeat an affirmation to yourself that affirms that you go to sleep quickly and easily.  Write it down several times a day, too.

There are many things that can keep you awake at night.  Take the steps necessary to resolve the things that are within your control.  Let go of the ones that aren’t.
