EFT Tapping for Overwhelm: A Gentle Way to Calm Your Nervous System

Discover how the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) - or tapping - can help reduce stress, calm your nervous system, and support you as you navigate your next chapter.

Have you ever caught yourself saying: "I know I shouldn't be this stressed."

Or maybe you've thought: "Why can't I just get over this?"

If so, you're not alone.

Many women find themselves feeling overwhelmed during major life transitions. Whether you're navigating an empty nest, changing careers, grieving a loss, caring for aging parents, ending a relationship, or simply sensing that life no longer fits who you've become, the emotional weight can feel exhausting.

The good news is that you don't have to rely on willpower alone.

One gentle practice that many people find helpful is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly known as tapping.

At The Next Chapter Method, I believe healing begins by creating safety for both your mind and body. EFT is one tool that can help you pause, reconnect, and move forward with greater calm.

What Is EFT Tapping?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) combine gentle tapping on specific acupressure points while acknowledging your thoughts and emotions.

Rather than trying to ignore uncomfortable feelings, EFT encourages you to notice them with curiosity and compassion while using rhythmic tapping to help calm your body's stress response.

Many people describe feeling lighter, calmer, or more emotionally grounded after tapping.

Research has found that EFT may help reduce stress and anxiety for some people, although experiences vary. It isn't a replacement for medical care or mental health treatment, but it can be a valuable self-care practice to use alongside other forms of support.

Why Life Transitions Feel So Overwhelming

When you're facing uncertainty, your brain naturally tries to protect you. Even positive changes can activate your body's stress response.

You may notice:

  • Racing thoughts
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Constant worrying
  • Feeling emotionally drained
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Feeling "stuck"

These responses don't mean you're weak. They often mean your nervous system is working overtime to keep you safe. That's why simply telling yourself to "calm down" or "relax" rarely works. Your body needs reassurance before your mind can fully relax.

How EFT Supports Your Nervous System

One reason many people appreciate EFT is that it invites both the body and mind into the healing process.

As you gently tap while acknowledging your emotions, you're giving yourself permission to notice what's happening without judgment.

Instead of pushing emotions away, you're creating space for them to soften.

Many people use EFT before:

  • Difficult conversations
  • Job interviews
  • Medical appointments
  • Big decisions
  • Public speaking
  • Bedtime
  • Meditation or prayer
  • Journaling

Even five minutes of intentional tapping can become a calming ritual during stressful seasons.

A Simple Beginner EFT Tapping Practice

If you're new to tapping, try this simple exercise.

Begin by taking a slow, deep breath.

Using two or three fingertips, gently tap the side of your hand (often called the Karate Chop point) while repeating:

"Even though I feel overwhelmed right now, I accept where I am, and I'm open to finding a little more peace."

Then gently tap each point while repeating a short reminder phrase like:

  • Eyebrow: "This overwhelm."
  • Side of Eye: "I've been carrying so much."
  • Under Eye: "It's been hard."
  • Under Nose: "I'm doing the best I can."
  • Chin: "Maybe I can let some of this go."
  • Collarbone: "I don't have to carry it all."
  • Under Arm: "I'm giving myself grace."
  • Top of Head: "I'm open to feeling calmer."

NOTE: It may be helpful to focus on one phrase at a time through the whole tapping round. For example, saying for all points from eyebrow to top of the head: "This overwhelm." Finish that round, then from eyebrow to top of the head, repeat the next phrase: "I've been carrying so much."

Take another deep breath. Notice how your body feels.

You don't have to force yourself to feel completely different. Even a small shift is progress.

Pair EFT with Journaling

One of my favorite ways to practice EFT is by following it with a few minutes of journaling. Once your nervous system begins to settle, it often becomes easier to hear your own inner wisdom.

Try asking yourself:

  • What emotion was I carrying today?
  • What do I need most right now?
  • What can I let go of?
  • What is one small step I can take today?
  • What would bring me peace this week?

These gentle questions can help you move from emotional overwhelm toward clarity and confidence.

Healing Happens One Small Step at a Time

If you're entering a new season of life, remember that healing isn't about becoming a different person. It's about reconnecting with the person you've always been beneath the stress, responsibilities, and expectations.

Some days, your next step might be a courageous decision. Other days, it might simply be taking a deep breath, tapping for five minutes, or writing one honest, raw page in your journal.

Every small act of self-care matters.

Your Next Chapter Starts Today

You don't have to have everything figured out before moving forward.

You simply need to begin.

One breath.

One journal entry.

One tapping session.

One small step at a time.

Those gentle moments of caring for yourself can become the foundation for your next chapter.
